Raising Our Puppies
NEO-NATAL PERIOD:
Our puppies are raised using an extensive, research based, structured programme called Puppy Culture. The first 12 weeks of a puppy’s life are incredibly important. This is a magical time when a breeder has the power to change the outcome of a puppy’s life by what we expose them to and choose to teach him/her. By doing certain exercises at just the right time, we can give your puppy the best possible start.
As well as following our Puppy Culture programme we are also qualified in Puppy Socialisation For Breeders. As a Pupstarts Ambassador we have all the knowledge and experience to ensure our puppies can cope with a human world, setting them up for success from the very start so that they are world ready!
Our goal is to raise dogs that have the emotional intelligence to connect with you and the resilience to connect with the human world. We do lots of work to help them grow into strong, resilient, confident and healthy well-adjusted adults. Benefits include greater tolerance to stress, greater resistance to disease, as well as a faster adrenal system and a stronger heart rate. Here's some of the things we work on:
-
Early Neurological Stimulation
-
Early Scent Introduction
-
Sound desensitisation
-
Introduction to textures & levels
-
Human (adults/teenagers/children) and canine interaction
-
Handling & grooming life skills (including nail clipping, bathing, introduction to brushing/clipping)
-
Car travel
-
Crate training
-
Toilet training
-
Outside world experiences
CRITICAL SOCIALISATION PERIOD:
The Critical Socialisation Period is 3-12 weeks. Most people think of socialisation as exposing their puppies to as many new experiences as possible while the puppy is young. While this is part of the process, it’s not enough. There are 7 key things that will nurture the emotional intelligence and resilience of a puppy.
1. Communication
2. Emotional stability
3. Habituation
4. Enrichment
5. Health
6. Skill
7. Love
While this is a huge amount of work and requires a lot of dedication, we are so passionate about following these protocols because we know that this will set your puppy apart, giving him/her the best possible start and improving their life forever.
Puppy Profiling
As our puppies grow and develop we spend a lot of time observing them and their reactions to everything we expose them to. This allows us to understand them as individuals and translates into a "profile" of each puppy. They are all individuals and will each suit particular homes. Observing the puppies' behaviours as they grow means that we can correctly and accurately match our puppies to the right people, placing them in the right homes first time where they will stay forever. We strive to ensure the right fit for our families, and the right fit for our puppies and have been super successful with matching people and puppies ensuring everyone is set up for success from the very beginning. We love to get to know our puppy owners through our detailed application form, phone calls and video calls where we we ask you lots of information about you, your family, your experience, and your dog owning expectations before meeting you in person. This translates into a 'profile' for each family too, and helps ensure that you welcome the right puppy for you and your family whilst taking out the guesswork for you. Choices based on colour and gender alone are not in the long term best interests of the puppy or you. Aligned behaviours and expectations are what is most important.
